I don’t think Vinnie does, but I’m always working against that to try and make sure it’s not falling into any stereotype traps. I always ask a lot of questions about gay, queer, and bisexual characters that I’m looking at, because I really don’t want them to fall in to any tropes or any sort of negative stereotypes. Both are set in the ’80s, right? Do you find that a complex thing to play, especially as an openly gay actor? To that point, Vinnie is closeted in Physical, as is your role of Nick De Noia in Welcome to Chippendales, which I’ve seen a few episodes of. We’re all living that sort of public-private kind of experience and it can be complicated. When you fully get to explore that, that’s so interesting. What I love about both of them is that they’re very richly explored in terms of their public-facing image and what’s going on privately. Yes, but I think they’re quite different characters. It’s a different process, but both characters have a similar sort of fall.

But in White Lotus too, Armond holds this facade in his role in the resort, and it’s gradually chipped away. Vinnie has a kind of breakdown in Physical, and it’s very contained to this one episode late in the season. Similarly to Rose’s character, they present this image to the world and you wonder, “Who the hell is that person underneath?” And this character of Vinnie Green that I play, when Annie told me about it-not Richard Simmons, but a Richard Simmons–type character, those characters from that era I find really fascinating. That kind of inner-outer world that we get to fully experience with her inner voice so present-I really connected with that. It feels very personal and very familiar to me, because I grew up in the ’80s and I know those characters, particularly Rose Byrne’s character, Sheila. I think Annie Weisman has done an amazing job with that show. I’ve always been a huge fan of Rose Byrne and I was really excited to have a chance to work with her. Why was that in that category of, “Yes, this is something I want to do,” when you do have choice and you do have to say no to other things? I love the show, but it’s pretty polarizing, and you’re coming into season two, adding a whole new energy.

Physical was the first big role you took on after filming White Lotus.
